Cuba Discovery Tour

Explore Cuba's Cultural Heritage with Friends and Family!

From February 15 to February 22, 2025

Explore 4 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Old Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad & the Sugar Mill Valley for $2,999 (taxes included)

Cuba presents a striking contrast of two distinct worlds. On one side, it boasts elements that have long captured admiration, such as its rich black coffee, renowned Havana rum, refreshing mojitos, iconic Cohiba cigars, classic American cars from the 1950s, and a vibrant cultural scene. Conversely, the island has faced criticism for its political stance, which has led to its isolation. In many ways, Cuba embodies a unique blend of nostalgia for its past while simultaneously embracing the potential for change and development.

As you journey through some of America’s most well-preserved Spanish historical sites, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Old Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad, you will encounter enriching cross-cultural experiences that will leave a lasting impression. The warmth of the Cuban people, along with the intricate tapestry of its culture and the complexities of its social, political, and economic landscape, will captivate you.

Interest in Cuba has surged in recent decades, fueled by images of its nostalgic charm that many admire from a distance. This fascination is particularly pronounced in the United States, where a long-standing embargo has restricted ordinary citizens from visiting the island legally for many years. The allure of exploring Cuba, with its backdrop reminiscent of the 1950s, adds to the island's desirability.

This tour aligns perfectly with the 15th Havana Art Biennial, making it a unique experience. Alongside exploring various exhibitions, one of the most exciting features of your journey is the opportunity to engage directly with some of Cuba's most well-known artists. Through our insightful studio visits, you can enjoy personal conversations with internationally acclaimed artists, discussing their creations and the evolving landscape of contemporary art in Cuba.

Cuban culture is a lively mix, from the infectious rhythms of salsa and rumba to a burgeoning arts scene. A leisurely walk through the cobblestone streets adorned with Spanish colonial architecture reveals the enchanting heart of Old Havana, where traces of the island's colonial history are evident. The authentic Cuba is both welcoming and exhilarating, offering a unique experience. With a lively jazz scene, a vibrant nightlife, culinary delights, and adventures in local neighborhoods, you will encounter a resilient people whose creativity and entrepreneurial spirit have sustained the nation despite its challenges.

Visiting Cuba can feel like a multifaceted experience, combining a history lesson, an adventure off the beaten path, and a cultural exchange with its fascinating inhabitants. The friendly nature of the Cuban people makes it easy to immerse yourself in their culture, even if just for a brief moment. The genuine spirit of Cuba awaits, eager to be explored.

However, you may wonder: how can Americans travel to Cuba? Is it even permissible for U.S. citizens to visit? While traditional tourism to Cuba is restricted for Americans due to the U.S. embargo, travel is possible through specific educational trips that support the Cuban people, allowing for a meaningful connection with the island.

Cuba Cultural Trips

Cuba is a paradise for beach lovers. There are few places in the world with as many beaches as Cuba and as beautiful as the ones in this amazing Caribbean Island. But there are many more reasons to take your family to Cuba beyond the nice beaches and mild temperatures such as the Cuban culture which is influenced by its melting pot of cultures, primarily those of Spain and Africa.

Cuban music is very rich and is the most commonly known expression of culture. The central form of this music is Son, which has been the basis of many other musical styles like salsa, rumba and mambo, the cha-cha-cha. Rumba originated in early Afro-Cuban culture. Popular Cuban music of all styles has been enjoyed & praised across the world. Cuban classical music features symphonic works as well as music for soloists, has received international acclaim thanks to composers like Ernesto Lecuona.

We will stop at a mirador (lookout) over the Sugar Mill Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of Cuba's most iconic landscapes and a highlight for visitors to the area. The valley is home to 65 significant sites that showcase the historical importance of sugar colonization on the island, making it a compelling destination for tourists.

In the 18th and late 19th centuries, a burgeoning national middle class, enriched by the sugar industry, established themselves in this expansive and fertile valley, which quickly became one of the country's leading sugar-producing regions. Tragically, countless enslaved Africans lost their lives while laboring in the grand sugar mills and the lavish structures that were constructed amidst the lush natural surroundings.

Followed by visit to the Manaca-Iznaga Hacienda. The famous Manaca-Iznaga Tower, built in 1816, is 45m high, has seven floors and 136 steps to the top. The restored hacienda is now a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the valley.

A traditional guarapera at the rear serves fresh-squeezed cane juice. Some barracones (slave quarters) still stand too.

Trinidad is well known for its pottery makers. We meet with a family that has been passing the tradition for generations: the Santanders.

    Lunch back at the hotel.

Afternoon: private visit to the studio of local artist Yudit Vidal. Yudit is the founder and director of the project ‘Entre hilos, alas y pinceles’ (Between threads, wings and brushstrokes) which groups 21 craftswomen who cultivate unique and exclusive stitches. Yudit was appointed ‘Ambassador for Peace’ by the International Circle of Ambassadors for Peace of Switzerland and France.

Evening is free to enjoy the beach, hotel amenities, and the lively streets of Trinidad. How about live Cuban popular music on steps of Casa de la Música – a great opportunity to dance with Cubans and your tour companions.

You will learn about the fruits and vegetables grown locally, such as mangos, bananas, mamey, chirimoya; and will taste some of them. You will also have the opportunity to tour the farm grounds via a horse ride or on a cart to see chickens, pigs, goats, ducks; and will get to feed them.

Finally we will walk to the top of a mild hill; and from this lookout, you will catch a breathtaking glimpse of the northern coast of East Havana.

Next we will get to enjoy a typical Cuban countryside lunch at the farm.

Afternoon: visit to Finca Vigia, a hilltop villa 20 kilometers east of Havana, where famed author Ernest Hemingway lived from 1939 to 1960. It is here where the writer completed some of his greatest works, including The Old Man and the Sea, Across the River and into the Trees, and Islands in the Stream.

The villa has been maintained as a museum for the past 49 years. It contains original book and short story manuscripts, letters, over 3000 photographs, Hemingway’s fishing tackle and gun collections, furniture, priceless art collection, and a 9000 volume library that contains rare first editions of his books and those of other famous writers.

Free time in the famous handicraft market of Old Havana, located inside the Almacenes de Deposito San Jose, an old warehouse on the harbourside where you can purchase all sorts of crafts and souvenirs by local artisans.

Evening: farewell dinner at thet privately-owned restaurant paladar La Moneda Cubana.

Next we recommend you visit FABRICA DE ARTE– The Factory of Art (F.A.C.). This is one of Havana’s finest new art spaces located in a converted factory in Vedado neighborhood. This is the brainchild of Afro-Cuban fusion musician X Alfonso who, after making a lot of money in the Hip Hop circuit, wanted to put something back into his community.
